Every year, Christmas decorations evolve with the times, allowing households to showcase their unique style based on the must-have trends of the season. As we move out of ‘the new normal’ and enjoy a Christmas free of pandemic restrictions, 2022 trends follow a pattern of brightening up Christmas with a hint of positivity and nostalgia.
Below, we’re talking about each of the year’s top trends, helping retailers to inspire their customers and boost profits during the most wonderful time of year for sales.
Glitz and glamour
Add extra sparkle to Christmas with a hint of glitz and glamour.
This trend is luxurious, bold and screams opulence, featuring sequins, glitter, metallic and crystal glass – basically anything which exudes a feeling of luxurious glamour.
A trend that truly shines, it’s perfect for bringing the sparkle back to the season after a year of gloom. To achieve this look, customers need to stock up on bright white lights, feathers, glittery baubles and anything that’s smothered in sequins.
Nostalgia
The current cost of living crisis and post-pandemic life have left everyone yearning for the good old days – and this is reflected in the nostalgic trend.
Nostalgia is all about celebrating the traditional, giving a nod to the past whilst incorporating cosy luxury. This trend is made up of classic red, green and gold shades which evoke memories of the past. In fact, these colours have been synonymous with Christmas for centuries, as cultures as far back as the Ancient Celts used evergreen holly to ‘keep the earth beautiful’ during the dead of winter.
Fast forward to now and this trend is still as popular as ever, with vintage decorations like nutcrackers still flying off the shelves each year. Traditions stand the test of time for a reason, so this trend is guaranteed to boost sales.
Hygge
Hygge is a Danish lifestyle trend, designed to help make winter more bearable.
It’s all about encompassing a feeling of cosy contentment through enjoying the simple things in life – like enjoying a cup of hot chocolate when it’s cold outside.
It promotes the feeling of well-being and has been a key part of Danish culture since the 1800s. However, it didn’t become a popular lifestyle trend in the UK until around 2016.
When it comes to Christmas, the Hygge trend brings that feeling to contentment to a traditionally hectic time of year. Customers achieve this trend through a collection of minimalist and rustic decorations, such a bright white fairy lights for a natural feel, with sprigs and pinecones to bring the calm of the outdoors inside.
A popular addition to this trend is also the Gonk - you can read all about this modern Christmas decoration here.
Festive Brights
After a year of doom and gloom, festive bright is the ideal trend for adding a splash of positivity to the Christmas period, featuring atypical Christmas décor and vivid colours.
Expect to see bright pinks, oranges, blues and purples clashing together to create a display that’s more festival than festive, offering a fabulous counter-balance to those darker winter days.
