E-Commerce is simply the buying and selling of goods and services over a website or electronic network. For many years it has been the domain of larger businesses who offer their products online as well as within a bricks and mortar store. But, is it time for independent retailers to get in on the action?
The idea isn’t as out there as you might think for smaller businesses. Developments in technology have made e-commerce platforms much more accessible to everyone. Many independent retailers are also running successful online businesses. Here’s 4 reasons why independent retailers should consider e-commerce in the near future.
#1 - It’s On The Rise
With worldwide e-commerce set to increase even further over the next 3 years, can independents afford to not explore this potential avenue? The global value of e-commerce sales currently stands at approximately £144 Trillion. More and more digital trends are seeing people utilise online shopping. Shoppers feel they get better deals online and it’s increasingly convenient.
#2 - Potential Turnover Increase
Of course, including e-commerce as part of your businesses strategy is not a guaranteed road to success. However, done correctly it has the potential to add to your company's turnover and provide another revenue stream that has previously been overlooked.
#3 - Increased Reach
Many independents operate within a restrictive location radius, using e-commerce platforms opens your business up to a national (or potentially even international) audience. If you get your product and service offering right for the online audience and compete on price and quality you could potentially see your products selling all over the country. Of course, be sure to account for distribution costs.
#4 - No Opening Hours
Your average business will have operational hours, usually around 8 - 9 hours per day. E-commerce doesn’t need to sleep, which means you could be earning money whilst you do! Many people shop on the internet during unsociable hours, therefore you could be earning 24 hours a day.
