Is it a gnome? Is it a strange looking Santa Claus? Nope, it’s known as a Gonk, and these little Christmas creatures have become more and more popular over the last five years or so, dominating festive window displays across the UK.
But what are they, and where exactly did they come from? Well, Gonks didn’t start life as a Christmas decoration, or in the UK for that matter – they are actually part of Nordic and Scandinavian mythology.
In folklore, these curious little creatures were said to take a liking to houses in the colder seasons. If families treated them well, they were said to protect the family and give them good luck. If they didn’t respect the gonk, then they would play tricks on the family.
Basically, the story is a message on the importance of being welcoming and kind.
Fast forward to 2022 and Gonks are now a Christmas icon. Garden centres, high street stores and Christmas shop shelves everywhere are bursting with these quirky gnomes, as customers flock to add some folkloric wonder to their modern ‘Hygge’ inspired Christmas displays.
Standing, sitting, legs dangling – there are loads of Gonk styles available, and the demand for them doesn’t seem to be slowing down either. To boost your Christmas sales this year, add some Scandinavian style to your Christmas collection by stocking up today.
