British winters are notoriously cold, that’s why generations of homes were designed to retain heat. Whilst this made chilly weather more bearable, summers were often an afterthought.
However, as the climate continues to warm and the UK experiences longer, hotter summers compared to before, we recognise that buying a fan simply won’t cut it anymore.
As summer approaches once more, here are some tips to help keep cool whilst you’re at home.
Close windows during the day
To keep the house cool, you need to keep the hot air out. This means keeping windows closed during the day – particularly south-facing windows. When night falls and temperatures drop, open the windows to allow cool air in and to give your home a good airing.
Create a cross breeze
If you do need to open windows during the day to let some air in, do it tactically. By opening windows or doors at opposite ends of the house, you can keep air moving through the house freely.
Replace old bulbs with LED bulbs
You might not think that lightbulbs emit much heat, but they can give off up to 90% of their energy as heat – unlike energy-saving light bulbs, which convert 90% of the energy to light. By making this simple swap, you can keep cool whilst making your house more planet friendly.
Buy a fan and use it wisely
Fans use energy, and often push warm air around the room instead of cooling it down. To ensure you get the best use of your household fan, use it wisely. The coolest air in the home will be at floor level, so place the fan on the floor and point it upwards to ensure to coolest air available in circulated. You can also position the fan facing a wall to bounce cooler air back into the room.
Energy-efficient windows
You might think energy-efficient windows are all about keeping heat in the house, but they’re also pretty good at keeping the sun’s heat outside. By upgrading to energy efficient windows, you won’t just be snug in winter, you’ll enjoy cooler summers too.
Insulate your home
If you’re able to invest in home insulation, take a look at roof and loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and solid wall insulation. Most people associate building insulation with cold weather and keeping heat in – but it’s just as good at keeping the heat out too.
