For self-employed gardeners, the summer months can be quite enjoyable and lucrative. However, it’s often a different story once winter rolls around.
Shorter days, near-freezing conditions and lower demand for work are all things which have to be dealt with throughout the winter season. So, what can you do to stay afloat?
Save up some emergency funds
Although there are ways to achieve a steady income during the winter months, you are completely at the mercy of the elements and there may be times when you are simply not able to carry out any jobs. Put some money aside throughout the year that can be used as an emergency fund if required.
Be equipped to deal with winter conditions
Despite dark days and cold temperatures, you should still be able to complete a number of regular tasks as long as you have the right equipment with you. For example, it might be a good idea to invest in some portable lighting so that you can work later without struggling to see.
Develop new skills
If you’re in a position to be able to take a break from work during the worst of the winter days, you could learn some new skills. Why not research some different training courses that compliment your current skill set? Developing new skills could allow you to charge more for your gardening services in the long run.
Offer additional services
As the conditions change, the type of work that a lot of your clients require changes too. Winter is a great time to work on overgrown features such as trees, shrubs and hedges. If the conditions get really bad, you could always offer a snow ploughing service!
Whatever you decide to do with your gardening business during the winter period, a solid plan can help to make sure to avoid any unforeseen financial worries.
Stax stock a range of gardening tools, workwear and accessories that can help you to work faster and more safely during the cold winter months.
