Rogue firms that employ illegal immigrants are to be decisively targeted by the Government. Raids are set to take place at random under suspected business. It is thought that the main types of businesses falling foul are care homes and independent construction firms.
The Immigration Minister, Mr Brokenshire said that 'Rogue employers who give jobs to illegal migrants are denying work to UK citizens and legal migrants and helping drive down wages. Experience tells us that employers who are prepared to cheat employment rules are also likely to breach health and safety rules and pay insufficient tax. That's why our new approach will be to use the full force of government machinery to hit them from all angles and take away the unfair advantage enjoyed by those who employ illegal migrants.'
The immigration crisis effecting Calais has been big news all summer and has seen Kent Police implement Operation Stack, effectively shutting the coast bound M20 for over a month.
Last week it was announced that the Government would cover the cost of the operation, which has so far reached over £700,000. This obviously doesn’t take into account Holidaymakers expense and other inconveniences that have led to miles of trail backs. However, on the other hand, the amount of illegal immigrants trying to get to Britain is a very small amount compared to the number that stay in mainland Europe, settling in Germany, Italy, Sweden and France.
