Van and tool theft is on the rise in the UK, with the number of reported cases rocketing 30% last year. It’s a disgusting crime that robs many not only of their tools, but also their livelihood and ability to earn an honest day’s wage. It’s a shame it’s such a necessity, but it’s essential that you take reasonable steps to prevent theft of your tools to avoid losing potentially thousands of pounds.
Here are our top tips for preventing theft:
If you can, don’t leave tools in your van overnight
It’s not ideal, but most thefts are done on vans overnight. If you can keep your tools more secure indoors it’s worth doing so! It’s also worth having a sticker declaring “no tools left in this van overnight” to try and deter damage to your van.
Double up on locks
Standard locks on vans are prone to theft, even on many of the newer models! It’s worth investing in dead locks or protection plates to prevent giving the criminals such an easy time. The sight of the extra locks may well be enough to deter would be thieves.
It’s also worth investing in some interior locks so that if they do get into your van they have an extra task to unlock the valuable tools inside.
Install window grills
It’s all well and good having secure locks, but many thieves will use the windows as access points if they can’t force the locks. Ensure all back windows have grills to prevent access this way.
Alarms and security lights
Upgrade your alarm system and ensure any attempt to force doors and windows will be detected. You can usually pick up a good alarm for around £300 to £400, which could prove a great investment should someone attempt to steal your tools or van.
If you can, park your van in view of a security light near your home or office. Most thieves like to work under cover of darkness and will be deterred if a security light startles them.
Mark your tools up
Notch your tools with your name using a file or knife to increase the chances of having them returned if they are stolen. It needs to be permanent to ensure the thieves can’t simply remove it. This will also make them more difficult to sell on as reasonable people won’t purchase a notched tool if they suspect it’s stolen.
