It’s good news for those who ditched a University education in favour of an apprenticeship as The Federation of Master Builders conducted research that found tradespeople typically earn thousands more than University graduates.

The research compared the average salaries of UK tradespeople versus those of University graduates and the findings paint a convincing picture! Tradespeople are earning up to £10,000 more per year than the average graduate who earns around £32,000 a year compared to £42,000.

The research takes into account the differences in average salary across the UK, but the difference is even greater when you compare regional differences. In London, for example, an experienced bricklayer can command wages up to £90,000 a year.

Plumbers and electricians were amongst some of the top earners and were found on average to earn more than architects and accountants. Site managers, supervisors and civil engineering operatives were also high earners.

Not only does this count for those who have spent years in the trade. Apprentices who typically get paid to do their learning are almost certainly better compared to those spending thousands on a University education.

So, there you go! Next time someone questions why you chose to ditch further education in favour of gaining a trade skill, you can tell them that a career in construction is the way to go for the financially savvy.

Top 5 average salaries for trade professionals:

1.  Site managers - £51,266

2.  Plumbers - £48,675

3.  Supervisors - £48,407

4.  Electricians - £47,265

5.  Civil engineering operatives - £44,253

Top 5 average salaries for graduates:

1.  Pharmacists - £42,252

2.  Dental practitioners - £40,268

3.  Architects - £38,228

4.  Teachers - £37,805

5.  Chartered and certified accountants - £37,748
