Billions of pounds are set to be spent in Manchester City Centre over the coming years. City bosses unveiled plans at the end of July to see an overhaul of current infrastructure that is guaranteed to stimulate the local economy.

The ambitious plans include a ‘vertical village’ in a tower block, NOMA, which is an £850m 450 apartment block in the city centre alongside further development to the First Street Complex and a £150m building scheme called ‘Kampus’, near Canal Street. The plan is to create a new vibrant city centre neighbourhood consisting of 500 apartments, Hotels, Leisure Space and independent bars and restaurants.

Several Skyscrapers are also planned but the most ambitious is probably Axis Tower. Axis Tower is to be built on a narrow triangular strip of land by Deansgate Locks and is designed to compliment Beetham Tower. The Tower will house 174 apartments and a 90ft high advertising screen. A further 300 apartments and 6 town houses could be built on the old Harry Ramsden’s site between Manchester and Salford.

Ancoats is set for 100’s more apartments to be built. This links to an on going 10 year plan between City Chiefs and Manchester City’s Owners building 300 new apartments in New Islington.

Transport will be further developed with the Ordsall Chord being constructed. This will see a new bridge over the Irwell and a direct train link between Victoria and Piccadilly. By 2017, the Metrolink system will be include a second city tram crossing that runs from Lower Mossley Street, down Cross Street and eventually links to Victoria station. St Peter’s Square will also be moved to a larger site and accommodate 4 platforms.
