Winter is a busy time for certain trades, as cold and wet British weather reaps havoc with housing. Plumbers and gas engineers are particularly busy, leading to make homeowners preparing in advance to avoid any issues over winter.

Demand for professional tradespeople begins to increase as we approach the colder, wetter months of winter so to avoid waiting weeks on end if the worst does happen, plan ahead to avoid a winter of discontent.

From snow storms to high winds, Great British weather always manages to keep us on our toes throughout the winter months – and by completing this checklist, homeowners across the UK can ensure damage is minimal, and peace of mind is paramount.

Boilers and radiators

Best to service before winter as gas engineers are always busy during winter months, as call outs mount up with freezing temperatures. It can cost between £60 and £120 for a service check or up to £500 for a power flush and repair.

As well as the boiler, don’t forget to make sure your radiators are in good working order before it gets too cold. Bleed them to clear any air that may be in the system, check they are not cold at the bottom and hot at the top, and if you can, get a plumber to flush the system. Check also they are not rusty or leaking.

Water pipes

Another trade who are busy during winter months are plumbers. By fitting pipe jackets, which can be done for as little as £50, many homeowners can save on the costly repairs if pipes get blocked or burst.
