To celebrate National Red Rose Day, we've asked our experts to share their top tips on growing and caring for roses.

Roses are a fantastic way of incorporating a fragrant, floral display into your outdoor space; they offer timeless and classic elegance, perfect for gardens of all sizes and styles...

  1. Select your rose species: firstly, consider where you will be growing your roses – will it be planted in a pot or a border? And secondly, consider what you want from your roses. Some species are famous for their scent, while others are known as being repeat flowerers.
  2. Sunlight and positioning: when it comes to choosing the perfect spot growing, remember that almost all species thrive in full sun. They also need plenty of room to grow and do not like to share their soil, so ensure you plant them spaciously.
  3. Water and fertilise generously: roses are typically a thirsty species requiring regular watering, and while they need minimal maintenance, they do need a good feed. Use a specialist fertiliser when watering for beautiful blooms, and strong, healthy foliage
  4. Pruning and preventing disease: Pruning is important to help promote healthy growth, encourage flowering and prevent the spread of disease. However, if a disease does set in, fungus prevention products, control and eradicate the problem, protecting your roses.
