Sales are predicted to exceed 5bn by 2018 based on new report ; Using data from 80% of the gard
Published 8th October 2014
Using data from 80% of the garden centre market and the input of garden product manufacturers MTW Research has produced the report responsible for these findings.
Garden furniture and water features are among garden sectors forecast to grow
The study outlines how the market is likely to strengthen, over the coming years with most garden centres likely to experience healthy performance in value and volume. While it notes an increased consumer penchant for high quality goods, it outlines an increase in imports which will gain share in the lower value sector as it rises by 25% over the next four years.
Garden products sold online are slowing as a trend for higher quality product and service gain consumer support, however internet sales are still set to reach £400m this year.
The threat of supermarkets is still a major concern as they broaden their attack, a key threat, on longer-term value growth.
Despite this, the report identifies numerous opportunities for growth in the market for value and volume. As the number of UK households increase, continuing to use their gardens in a more diverse nature, they will be complemented by improved sophistication of marketing and product development, driving growth.
Expect to see strong performance in garden buildings; horticulture, garden lighting; water features; garden furniture; outdoor cooking; garden equipment and garden care products. A steady rise in garden centre mergers and acquisitions is also forecast.
The report also found that 70% of garden centres, in the last 12 months, had experienced sales growth. Pushed by core garden products, catering, pet care, leisure activities and destination marketing.
Finally the report predicts the garden products market outpacing the UK GDP by over 5% during the next 4 years, the majority of suppliers and retailers are predicted to find increased success next year and further.
