Garden centre sales are starting to level out after the gardening boom of 2020, although they remain high when put next to 2019. Sales from September were up 29% from the same period in 2019, but down 7% from 2020.

However, retailers should bear in mind that a number of economic factors are threatening customer confidence.

The Horticultural Trades Association’s latest Market Update report shows that larger in inflation rates has are having a negative impact on customers’ confidence in their finances due to recent price hikes on things like household bills, fuel and gas,

Price increases on the horticulture supply chain are also having an impact, with shipping container costs at an all-time high. 

As part of its market update report, the HTA asked a number of British adults what they feel are the biggest issues facing the UK today. 24% admitted feeling concerned about the economy. 

There are some positives, though. The HTA Member business confidence index showed that HTA members are feeling positive about the next 12 months. 

61% of members expect volume of sales to extend, 59% are planning to invest more in skills and staff training, 54% expect to offer in new products or services, and 47% expect to target new customers
