A delegation from Bira is set to meet with Gareth Thomas, Minister for Small Business, with the primary focus of discussing the retention of the retail business rates discount.
The meeting, which will take place tomorrow (Tuesday 1st October) will be attended by John Jones (Bira President), Surinder Josan (Chair of the Local Partnership Council), John Halliday (Director of Marketing), and CEO Andrew Goodacre.
The crucial support of the retail business rates discount, currently offering a 75% relief to small independent retailers and seen as a lifeline by thousands of businesses, is due to expire in March 2025. Bira is urging the Chancellor to extend this relief in the upcoming Autumn Statement later this month.
In addition to the key issue of business rates, the delegation will address other major concerns for independent retailers, including rising retail crime, investment in high streets, parking and accessibility, and access to cash.
Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, said: “We have new government with a focus on growth. We want to demonstrate the role indie retailers play in delivering growth.”
