The May Day Bank Holiday was the hottest on record and it showed in the purchasing decisions made by consumers as retailers reported a huge increase in paddling pool sales, as well as home spas.

Retailers and garden centres enjoyed a bumper weekend due to the unexpectedly warm weather, hopefully, a sign of things to come as the Summer approaches. Other popular products included the usual suspects, sun cream, plants, gardening equipment, BBQ’s and outdoor furniture. One large supermarket also reported a large spike in the sale of novelty gnomes as consumer attention turned to their gardens for the first time this year.

These reports simply highlight the potential benefits and boost in profits that retailers can experience with warmer weather. It also shows the importance of ensuring you’re well placed with the right products at the right time to capitalise when the sunny weather strikes, as unpredictable as it is.

Our advice would be to ensure that you aren’t operating reactively to the weather and that the right products are sourced in advance ready to pounce as soon as the sun makes an appearance. Paddling pools and other associated products can be easily stored until the right moment if store floor space is limited.
